11.2 The Group of Holomorphic Automorphisms on ๐”ป๐‘› and ๐ต๐‘›

A function ๐’‡:ฮฉโІโ„‚๐‘šโ†’โ„‚๐‘› is called holomorphic iff each of its component functions is holomorphic. It is important to allow for vector-valued outputs, since we are interested in automorphisms on complex domains in higher dimensions.

For the aforesaid purpose, we require a generalization of the Schwarz Lemma (Lemmaย 3.5.1Lemmaย 3.5.1Lemmaย 3.5.1), which is equivalent to several results of Cartan.

In preparation, we will introduce several relevant concepts.

Definition 11.2.1 (Multi-Index Notation).

A multi-index is an ๐‘›-tuple of nonnegative integers ๐’Œ=(๐‘˜1,โ€ฆ,๐‘˜๐‘›)โˆˆโ„คโ‰ฅ0๐‘›. We define

where ๐’›=(๐‘ง1,โ€ฆ,๐‘ง๐‘›)โˆˆโ„‚๐‘›.

Definition 11.2.2.

A polynomial ๐:โ„‚๐‘›โ†’โ„‚๐‘š of several variables is said to be homogeneous of degree ๐‘‘ iff

or equivalently, iff ๐ can be written as

๐(๐’›)=โˆ‘|๐’Œ|=๐‘‘๐’‚๐’Œ๐’›๐’Œ
where ๐’Œโˆˆโ„คโ‰ฅ0๐‘› is a multi-index.

Proposition 11.2.3.

Let ๐:โ„‚๐‘›โ†’โ„‚๐‘š be a homogeneous polynomial of degree ๐‘‘ (not identically zero).

  1. For any multi-index ๐œถ=(๐›ผ1,โ€ฆ,๐›ผ๐‘›) with |๐œถ|โ‰ค๐‘‘,

is a homogeneous polynomial of degree ๐‘‘โˆ’|๐œถ|.
  2. If |๐œถ|=๐‘‘โ‰ 0, then ๐œ•๐œถ๐ is constant (and there exists a multi-index ๐œถโ€ฒ with |๐œถโ€ฒ|=๐‘‘ such that ๐œ•๐œถโ€ฒ๐ is nonzero).
  3. If |๐œถ|>๐‘‘, then ๐œ•๐œถ๐โ‰ก0.
Proof.

Writing ๐(๐’›)=โˆ‘|๐’Œ|=๐‘‘๐’‚๐’Œ๐’›๐’Œ with coefficients ๐’‚๐’Œโˆˆโ„‚๐‘š, we compute

where the terms with ๐‘˜๐‘—<๐›ผ๐‘— vanish. For each remaining term, the total degree is

Hence, ๐œ•๐œถ๐ is a homogeneous polynomial of degree ๐‘‘โˆ’|๐œถ|, establishing Partย 1Partย 1Partย 1.

If |๐œถ|=๐‘‘, every surviving monomial has degree 0, so ๐œ•๐œถ๐ is constant. Moreover, since ๐ has degree exactly ๐‘‘, there exists some multi-index ๐’Œ with |๐’Œ|=๐‘‘ and ๐’‚๐’Œโ‰ ๐ŸŽ; choosing ๐œถโ€ฒ=๐’Œ yields a nonzero constant derivative. This proves Partย 2Partย 2Partย 2.

Finally, if |๐œถ|>๐‘‘, then for every term in the expansion, at least one ๐‘˜๐‘—<๐›ผ๐‘—, so all summands vanish identically. Thus ๐œ•๐œถ๐โ‰ก0, verifying Partย 3Partย 3Partย 3.

Lemma 11.2.4 (Cartan).

Let ฮฉโŠ‚โ„‚๐‘› be a bounded region, and suppose that ๐’‡=(๐‘“1,โ€ฆ,๐‘“๐‘›):ฮฉโ†’ฮฉ is holomorphic. If โˆƒ๐’‚โˆˆฮฉ such that ๐’‡(๐’‚)=๐’‚ and the complex Jacobian at ๐’‚ is the identity matrix, or equivalently, if

then ๐’‡(๐’›)โ‰ก๐’› is the identity map.
Proof.

By Theoremย 11.1.3Theoremย 11.1.3Theoremย 11.1.3, we have the expansion

which is absolutely convergent on some polydisk centered at ๐’‚, where ๐’‚๐’Œ=๐œ•๐’Œ๐’‡(๐’‚)โˆ๐‘—=1๐‘›๐‘˜๐‘—! and ๐’Œ=(๐‘˜1,โ€ฆ,๐‘˜๐‘›). The terms have been rearranged (from absolute convergence) so that the inner summation is a homogeneous polynomial ๐๐‘— with a zero at ๐’›=๐’‚ and degree ๐‘—.

Trivially, ๐’‚1,0,โ€ฆ,0=๐œ•๐’‡๐œ•๐‘ง1(๐’‚)=(1,0,โ€ฆ,0) by (11.2.1)(11.2.1)(11.2.1). Similarly, ๐’‚0,1,0,โ€ฆ,0=(0,1,0,โ€ฆ,0),โ€ฆ,๐’‚0,โ€ฆ,0,1=(0,โ€ฆ,0,1). Hence, the linear homogeneous polynomial of (11.2.2)(11.2.2)(11.2.2) equals

and the entire expansion is thus equal to

Define a sequence of holomorphic functions {๐’‡๐‘˜(๐’›)}๐‘˜โˆˆโ„• by

Assume the existence of some ๐‘šโˆˆโ„•, the smallest ๐‘—โ‰ฅ2 such that ๐ is not identically zero. Because

it then follows that

๐’‡2(๐’›)=๐’›+๐๐‘š(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚)+โˆ‘๐‘—>๐‘š๐๐‘—(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚)+๐๐‘š(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚+โˆ‘๐‘—โ‰ฅ๐‘š๐๐‘—(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚))+โˆ‘๐‘—>๐‘š๐๐‘—(๐’‡(๐’›)โˆ’๐’‚)=๐’›+2๐๐‘š(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚)+(homogeneous polynomials of degree>๐‘š)(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚).

Assume, for induction, that

๐’‡๐‘˜(๐’›)=๐’›+๐‘˜๐๐‘š(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚)+(homogeneous polynomials of degree>๐‘š)(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚).

Then we have

๐’‡๐‘˜+1(๐’›)=๐’›+โˆ‘๐‘—โ‰ฅ๐‘š๐๐‘—(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚)+๐‘˜๐๐‘š(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚+โˆ‘๐‘—โ‰ฅ๐‘š(degree๐‘—hom. polynomial)(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚))+โˆ‘๐‘—>๐‘š(homogeneous polynomial of degree๐‘—)(๐’‡(๐’›)โˆ’๐’‚)=๐’›+(๐‘˜+1)๐๐‘š(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚)+(degree>๐‘šhomogeneous polynomials)(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚).

Since ๐’‡๐‘˜(ฮฉ)โІฮฉ for any ๐‘˜, the sequence {๐’‡๐‘˜}๐‘˜โˆˆโ„• is uniformly bounded on ฮฉ. By Montelโ€™s Theorem (Theoremย 11.1.7Theoremย 11.1.7Theoremย 11.1.7), there exists a subsequence {๐’‡๐‘˜๐‘™}๐‘™โˆˆโ„• that converges locally uniformly to some holomorphic function ๐’‡ฬƒ by virtue of Weierstrass (Theoremย 11.1.6Theoremย 11.1.6Theoremย 11.1.6).

Since ๐๐‘šโ‰ข0, there exists ๐œถ satisfying โ€–๐œถโ€–=๐‘š such that

๐œ•๐œถ๐๐‘šโ‰ก๐’„โ‰ ๐ŸŽ

is a nonzero constant by Propositionย 11.2.3Propositionย 11.2.3Propositionย 11.2.3. Consequently,

๐œ•๐œถ(homogeneous polynomials of degree>๐‘š)(๐’›โˆ’๐’‚)

is a homogeneous polynomial with degree โ‰ฅ1 and thus vanishes as ๐’›โ†’๐’‚. Similarly, ๐’›โ†ฆ๐’› is homogeneous with degree 1<๐‘š and thus ๐œ•๐œถ๐‘ง vanishes. Therefore,

๐œ•๐œถ๐’‡๐‘˜(๐’‚)=๐‘˜๐’„,

which diverges as ๐‘˜โ†’โˆž. Weierstrassโ€™ Convergence Theorem (Theoremย 11.1.6Theoremย 11.1.6Theoremย 11.1.6) gives that ๐œ•๐œถ๐’‡๐‘˜๐‘™(๐’‚)โ†’๐œ•๐œถ๐’‡ฬƒ(๐’‚) which must be finite by holomorphy, contradicting the divergence. Hence, the assumed value for ๐‘š cannot exist and hence ๐๐‘—โ‰ก0 for all ๐‘—โ‰ฅ2. Thus, ๐’‡(๐’›)โ‰ก๐’› on some polydisk centered at ๐’‚. By the Identity Theorem (Theoremย 11.1.4Theoremย 11.1.4Theoremย 11.1.4), ๐’‡(๐’›)โ‰ก๐’› on ฮฉ.

By Lemmaย 11.2.4Lemmaย 11.2.4Lemmaย 11.2.4, ๐‹(๐’›)โ‰ก๐’› on ฮฉ. Hence, ๐’‡โˆ˜๐†๐œƒ=๐†๐œƒโˆ˜๐’‡ for all ๐œƒโˆˆโ„. Together with Theoremย 11.1.3Theoremย 11.1.3Theoremย 11.1.3, write

On the other hand, composing with ๐†๐œƒ with (11.2.3)(11.2.3)(11.2.3) gives

Hence, by the uniqueness of power series expansions, we must either have that ๐’‚๐’Œ=๐ŸŽ, ei๐œƒโ‰กei๐œƒ|๐’Œ|, or equivalently, that โˆ€๐œƒโˆˆโ„,

This is only possible when |๐’Œ|=1 by irrationality, and thus ๐’‚๐’Œ=๐ŸŽ for all |๐’Œ|โ‰ 1. Therefore, ๐’‡ must be linear.

Remark.

If ๐‘›=1, then ฮฉ=๐ท(0,๐‘…) for some ๐‘…>0 and any automorphism ๐‘“ with a fixed point 0 is a rotation in the form of ๐‘งโ†ฆei๐œƒ๐‘ง, hence linear, the effective statement of the Schwarz Lemma (Lemmaย 3.5.1Lemmaย 3.5.1Lemmaย 3.5.1).

Theorem 11.2.11 (The Holomorphic Automorphism Group on ๐”ป๐‘›).

The holomorphic automorphism group of the polydisk ๐”ป๐‘› consists solely of biholomorphisms in the form of

where ๐‘ท is a ๐‘›ร—๐‘› permutation matrix (for coordinate permutations), (๐œƒ1,โ€ฆ,๐œƒ๐‘›)โˆˆโ„๐‘›, and (๐‘Ž1,โ€ฆ,๐‘Ž๐‘›)โˆˆ๐”ป๐‘›. Moreover, every such map is indeed an automorphism.

Let ๐’‡โˆˆAut(๐”ป๐‘›) be arbitrary, and set ๐œถ=(๐›ผ1,โ€ฆ,๐›ผ๐‘›)=๐’‡(๐ŸŽ). It follows that ๐‹โˆ˜๐’‡(๐ŸŽ)=๐ŸŽ and ๐‹โˆ˜๐’‡โˆˆAut(๐”ป๐‘›).

By Lemmaย 11.2.10Lemmaย 11.2.10Lemmaย 11.2.10, the map ๐‹โˆ˜๐’‡ is linear, so ๐‹โˆ˜๐’‡(๐’›)=๐‘จ๐’› for some invertible constant matrix ๐‘จ=(๐œ1,1โ€ฆ๐œ1,๐‘›โ‹ฎโ‹ฑโ‹ฎ๐œ๐‘›,1โ€ฆ๐œ๐‘›,๐‘›), hence ๐‘จโˆˆAut(๐”ป๐‘›). Thus,

which implies |๐œ๐‘˜,๐‘—|โ‰ค1 for all ๐‘—,๐‘˜โˆˆ{1,โ€ฆ,๐‘›} (for if |๐œ๐‘˜,๐‘—|>1, then choosing ๐‘ง๐‘—=1|๐œ๐‘˜,๐‘—|+๐œ€ with 0<๐œ€<1โˆ’1|๐œ๐‘˜,๐‘—| and ๐‘ง๐‘™=0 for ๐‘™โ‰ ๐‘— yields a contradiction).

For each ๐‘—โˆˆ{1,โ€ฆ,๐‘›}, define the sequence {๐’›๐‘—,๐‘˜}๐‘˜โˆˆโ„• for each ๐‘˜โˆˆโ„• by

where we informally let |๐œ๐‘—,๐‘–|๐œ๐‘—,๐‘–=0 if ๐œ๐‘—,๐‘–=0. Then, for all ๐‘—โˆˆ{1,โ€ฆ,๐‘›} and ๐‘˜โˆˆโ„•,

In particular, the ๐‘—-th component is

As ๐‘˜โ†’โˆž,

Now consider, for each ๐‘—โˆˆ{1,โ€ฆ,๐‘›}, the sequence ๐’›๐‘—,๐‘˜โ€ฒ=(0,โ€ฆ,0,1โˆ’1๐‘˜,0,โ€ฆ,0), where 1โˆ’1๐‘˜ is in the ๐‘—-th position. Then

As ๐‘˜โ†’โˆž, ๐’›๐‘—,๐‘˜โ€ฒโ†’๐’†๐‘—โˆˆ๐œ•(๐”ป๐‘›) (the ๐‘—-th unit basis vector), so the limit is

Because the function ๐‘จ is injective on all of โ„‚๐‘›, if ๐œป๐‘—โˆˆ๐”ป๐‘› (within the interior), then ๐‘จโˆ’1โˆˆAut(๐”ป๐‘›) would map ๐œป๐‘— to ๐’†๐‘—โˆˆ๐œ•(๐”ป๐‘›), which is an impossibility. Hence, ๐œป๐‘—โˆˆ๐œ•(๐”ป๐‘›), and consequently, max๐‘–โˆˆ{1,โ€ฆ,๐‘›}|๐œ๐‘–,๐‘—|=1. Combined with (11.2.5)(11.2.5)(11.2.5), this forces exactly one entry in the ๐‘—-th column of ๐‘จ to have absolute value 1 (of the form ei๐œƒ๐‘—), with all others zero.

Invertibility of ๐‘จ ensures each column has at least one nonzero entry, so ๐‘จ is a monomial matrix, which factors to

Let ๐œŽ:โ„•โ‰ค๐‘›โ†’โ„•โ‰ค๐‘› be the permutation induced by ๐‘ท. The map ๐‘จ multiplies the ๐‘š-th input coordinate ๐‘ง๐‘š by ei๐œƒ๐‘š and permutes to place it in the ๐œŽ(๐‘š)-th output position, so the ๐œŽ(๐‘š)-th coordinate of ๐‘จ๐’› is ei๐œƒ๐‘š๐‘ง๐‘š. Applying ๐‹โˆ’1 component-wise then gives, for the ๐‘˜-th output coordinate,

Set ๐‘Ž๐œŽโˆ’1(๐‘˜)=โˆ’๐›ผ๐‘˜eโˆ’i๐œƒ๐œŽโˆ’1(๐‘˜)โˆˆ๐”ป. Then

Definition 11.2.13.

A matrix ๐‘ผ is said to be unitary iff its inverse is its conjugate transpose, or iff ๐‘ผโ€ ๐‘ผ=๐‘ผ๐‘ผโ€ =๐‘ฐ.

Definition 11.2.14.

A matrix ๐‘ด is said to be monomial iff it has exactly one nonzero entry in each row and each column.

Theorem 11.2.15 (Spectral Theorem).

For any unitary matrix ๐‘ผ, there exists a unitary matrix ๐‘ฝ such that ๐‘ผ=๐‘ฝ๐‘ซ๐‘ฝโ€ , where ๐‘ซ is a diagonal matrix whose diagonal entries are all of unit modulus.
Proof.

Because โ€–๐‘ผ๐’›โ€–2=๐’›โ€ ๐‘ผโ€ ๐‘ผ๐’›=โ€–๐’›โ€–2 for any ๐’›โˆˆโ„‚๐‘›, any eigenvalue ๐œ†1 (existence given by the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra in Theoremย 3.3.1Theoremย 3.3.1Theoremย 3.3.1 on the characteristic equation) of ๐‘ผ must satisfy

where โ€–๐’—1โ€–=1 is the corresponding eigenvector in โ„‚๐‘›. Then

Let ๐’—1โŸ‚={๐’˜:๐’—1โ€ ๐’˜=๐ŸŽ}โŠ‚โ„‚๐‘› be an (๐‘›โˆ’1)-dimensional subspace. For any ๐’˜โˆˆ๐’—1โŸ‚,

so ๐‘ผ๐’˜โˆˆ๐’—1โŸ‚. Hence ๐’—1โŸ‚ is invariant under ๐‘ผ. The restriction of ๐‘ผ to ๐’—1โŸ‚, ๐‘ผ|๐’—1โŸ‚, yields another eigenvalue ๐œ†2โˆˆ๐œ•๐”ป with eigenvector ๐’—2โˆˆ๐’—1โŸ‚ satisfying |๐œ†2|=1 and โ€–๐’—2โ€–=1. Similarly, we may define ๐’—2โŸ‚โŠ‚๐’—1โŸ‚, which is an (๐‘›โˆ’2)-dimensional subspace invariant under ๐‘ผ. Repeating this process inductively, we obtain an orthonormal basis {๐’—1,โ€ฆ,๐’—๐‘›} of eigenvectors of ๐‘ผ with corresponding eigenvalues ๐œ†1,โ€ฆ,๐œ†๐‘›โˆˆ๐œ•๐”ป. Setting

๐‘ฝ=(๐’—1โ‹ฏ๐’—๐‘›),๐‘ซ=diag(๐œ†1,โ‹ฏ,๐œ†๐‘›)

gives that

The ๐‘˜-th diagonal entry of ๐‘ฝโ€ ๐‘ฝ is equal to ๐’—๐‘˜โ€ ๐’—๐‘˜=โ€–๐’—๐‘˜โ€–2=1, while the non-diagonal entries correspond to ๐’—๐‘˜โ€ ๐’—๐‘™ for some ๐‘˜โ‰ ๐‘™, which vanish by orthogonality in construction. Thus, ๐‘ฝโ€ ๐‘ฝ=๐‘ฐ (unitary) and ๐‘ฝ๐‘ซ๐‘ฝโ€ =๐‘ผ.

A unitary transformation is a map in the form of ๐’›โ†ฆ๐‘ผ๐’›, where ๐‘ผ is a unitary matrix.

Proposition 11.2.17.

A function ๐’‡ is a unitary transformation iff ๐’‡โˆˆAut(๐ต๐‘›) and ๐’‡(๐ŸŽ)=๐ŸŽ.
Proof.

Because ๐ต๐‘› is a bounded complete circular domain centered at ๐ŸŽ, from Lemmaย 11.2.10Lemmaย 11.2.10Lemmaย 11.2.10 we have that ๐’‡โ‰ก๐‘ผ for some constant invertible matrix

More explicitly, we have

Letting ๐’›=๐’†๐‘– (1โ‰ค๐‘–โ‰ค๐‘›) be the ๐‘–-th unit basis vector, we obtain

Letting ๐’›=22(๐’†๐‘–+๐’†๐‘—) (๐‘–โ‰ ๐‘—), we have

which implies that โˆ‘๐‘˜=1๐‘›โ„‘๐”ช(๐œ๐‘˜,๐‘–๐œ๐‘˜,๐‘—โ€พ)=0. Therefore, by (11.2.7)(11.2.7)(11.2.7), for all ๐‘–,๐‘—โˆˆ{1,โ€ฆ,๐‘›}, observe that

where ๐›ฟ๐‘—,๐‘– is the Kronecker delta. Hence, we have ๐‘ผโ€ ๐‘ผ=๐‘ฐ, and thus ๐‘ผ is unitary.

Conversely, if ๐’‡(๐’›)=๐‘ผ๐’› for some unitary matrix ๐‘ผ, then for any ๐’›โˆˆ๐ต๐‘›,

so ๐’‡ maps ๐ต๐‘› to ๐ต๐‘›. Since ๐‘ผ is invertible with unitary inverse ๐‘ผโ€ , the map ๐’‡ is bijective with inverse ๐’‡โˆ’1(๐’˜)=๐‘ผโ€ ๐’˜, which also maps ๐ต๐‘› to ๐ต๐‘›. Therefore, ๐’‡โˆˆAut(๐ต๐‘›) and ๐’‡(๐ŸŽ)=๐ŸŽ.
